Statement

I have worked as a furniture maker for two decades, designing and making one-off pieces of residential furniture for clients in the Toronto Area.  With a desire to make well-crafted, functional objects that transform the space they inhabit, I have generated a body of work that includes desks, beds, dining tables, buffet cabinets, benches, and side chairs.

My artistic and technical point of departure is furniture in terms of its place in history, as well as its use in a contemporary setting.  Throughout history, designers have synthesized naturalistic inspiration with technical innovation to produce functional objects.

As a Designer, I am drawn to natural forms that transition from part to part, from vertical to horizontal.  Think of those great fuzzy-needled lateral branches that extend the seed-bearing capacity of the stout-trunked Eastern White Pine.  In Furniture, a heavy vertical leg transitions into a much lighter cantilevered seat.  A Cabinet surface can pop out into a door handle. In my work, I look for opportunities to use these forms to produce functional, enduring pieces that invite use.

After graduating from the Furniture Program at Sheridan College in Oakville Ontario, and then setting up shop in Downtown Toronto, I participated in local craft and design exhibitions at The Ontario Crafts Council, Prime Gallery, Iidex, and with The Furniture Collective at Harbourfront’s York Quay Gallery.  Throughout the 1990’s, my work in these exhibitions received favourable review by design writers in The Globe & Mail,  Azure Magazine, Canadian Architect, and Ontario Craft.

Last year, I produced The Parkdale Chair for Joel Robson's show, "Losing Parkdale", that opened at The Ontario Crafts Council on
January 19, 2012.

I am presenting The Parkdale Chair and Stool at The Interior Design Show's Studio North (Booth:SN36).  The show opens at The Toronto Convention Center:  January 24 to 27th 2013.
